Hi. I have recently had 3 or 4 episodes in the last 6 weeks or so, where I wake up with what I can only describe as a feeling of a choking experience. I can’t catch a breath until about 10-20 seconds and forcing a cough. I am feeling quite worried and anxious about it, thinking it may be my last breath! Can anyone help with the what I should do? Your help and feedback will be very much appreciated. Regards Chris

Have you been diagnosed with sleep apnea, and are you using a CPAP machine?

Hi Sierra, I have not been diagnosed as yet, nor using a machine. My brother has been diagnosed with apnea and with the same symptoms as him I assume I have Apnea too. I am currently abroad on holiday so am going to make an appointment with my GP on my return next week. Meanwhile I was just asking the forum for some advice.

There is not much you can do about it without a CPAP, and to get a new one you need a prescription in most countries. Used ones may be for sale however. You can evaluate your risk with the STOP-Bang Questionnaire. See this link.
