Hi everyone . Week one of my CPAP ends today. So far so good I've noticed some improvement . I never had a big AHI as others have mine was 18 I believe. I use to get up to use the bathroom at least 3/4 times a night also and now I don't AT ALL. Which is amazing. But I've noticed that now if I sleep more than 6/7 hours I feel like crap? Is that normal. I try to hit my 8/9 at least because I've been sleep deprived for a while so I want to make up for it but for some reason I wake up around the 6/7 hour and can't fall back asleep but if I try to sleep more I feel horrible. Does anyone have the same problem ? And I've read sleeping less than 8 could bring on health problems later. Thanks for your replies.
Yayoe10.... Welcome! Similar issues to yours. Your apnea is considered "moderate" BUT if you stop breathing 18 times an hour, this can have consequences. I had an AHI of 16 BUT I quit breathing for LONG periods and my blood oxygen saturation spent a lot of time in the low 70s. Organ damage is a very real possibility not to mention a ton of other medical negatives can result.
I had similar sleep (or lack of deep sleep) patterns as I got up during the night a similar number of times. Why? Today I believe that it was because I was cat-napping as opposed to sleeping deeply. Before therapy, I slept 5-6 hours on average per night and it is about the same now BUT I was falling asleep riding my motorcycle, operating power tools and worst, nodding off in church and embarrassing my missus hehe. That stopped with therapy. I sleep VERY soundly now and don't remember dreaming where before my nights were full of half-awake dreams.
I am sure that 8 hours of sleep a night is probably a great number some expert came up with but I have never gone past 5-6 hours and feel great in the AM (we get up at 5AM). I have been on therapy for about a year or a tad more and have only done 7 hours a few times. The quality of sleep outweighs the quantity to a large extent in my unprofessional opinion based on my own experience. When I awake now, I am fully awake and almost never go back to sleep.... good luck!
Thanks for the reply ! Oh crap your oxygen would go really low man! The lowest mine went was 87% I believe so it wasn't so bad as others. But I did feel like it all affected me . Same here I would have a lot of half awake dreams it was weird . So far on the machine I've had them twice and I felt like I didn't sleep good those two days. But most days I barely dream I could only remember a little of whatever I dreamt . I still feel kind of tired at times but I'm trynna give it more time. Although i can last more hours of the day now but the only thing now is I get a random point of the day where. I feel so sleepy like beyond sleepy like I need to sleep RIGHT NOW when I start feeling like that it's horrible I didn't use to get that till I start treatment
Well, therapy is a process and doesn't work immediately but you will figure things out. It has taken me over a year to figure out how to wear my mask so it doesn't leak and to put my AHI at zero several times a week. I don't sleep as long as the experts say I should but since I feel pretty good, guess that is really what counts. Good luck!
