good afternoon,

I was perscribed a BiPAP machine to replace an older CPAP ResMed S8 due to the need for higher pressure settings. My Dr wrote a script for a ResMed VPAP S S9 which isnt made/sold anymore apparently.

Looking online I see a ResMed S10 VPAP vAuto as well as S10 VPAP S. Does anyone have experiance with either model and the pro/con's vs lookig for the older S9?

My presssure is suppose to be 20/17 per the script if that helps.

thanks!

I have no personal experience with the BiLevel machines, but I have looked at them as a possible solution to my higher than average central apnea frequency. The one I would pick is the AirCurve 10 VAuto. It is capable of being set to the Auto mode, S mode, and CPAP mode. See the link below for a feature comparison of the models, near the bottom of the link. I also think this may be the most reasonably priced model depending on where you shop. What country are you in? The only value in shopping for a S9 model would be a possible lower price. The AirCurve 10 models are the newest and it would seem if you are getting a new machine you may as well get the latest model with the latest features.

One other thought. I believe the S8 series machines have Expiratory Pressure Relief, or EPR. It seems to me that you could set the S8 to a set pressure of 20, and an EPR of 3 to get essentially the same thing as a 20/17 setting on a BiLevel machine. Or is your doctor anticipating that you are going to need more than 20/17 for pressure?

No S9 machine is being sold new near as I know. I have a couple and they are OK but on both, the bearings start getting so noisy after a couple hours of sleep that you can't sleep through it. The noise conducts from the machine through the air tube. People have fixed this issue but it really isn't worth it. The current ResMed offering is the Aircurve 10 Bipap... there are some variations but I don't think these are relevant to your issue. My prescription is 25/20. The only machines out there to my knowledge that go up to 25 are BiPap; almost all straight CPAP machines go 20. I have switched my machine to 25/25 to get a CPAP effect and slept like a baby with no higher AHI... was told the lower exhaust pressure was for comfort. Suggest you ask you doc WHY you need a BiPap machine since any Cpap can do 20.
