After being on bipap since June my husband has been approved for ASV. We are waiting on one, hopefully this week. His original AHI was 93 and he has obstructive and central sleep apnea. The bipap improved him to anywhere between 1 and 20 AHI but he is still tired during the day. An echo stress in May showed an ejection fraction of 60.2 and was normal except for slight sclerosis on the aortic valve. He is 66 and we bicycle an hour most days. No other health problems. I keep hearing about increased risk of heart problems associated with ASV and would like input from anyone with experience using an ASV machine.

I switched to an ASV 2 months ago. Your husband can expect an average AHI of 0.0 to 0.3. I would think that that in itself would reduce heart risk. You need to talk to a neurologist to get an informed opinion but expect a hedged response.

My husband has been on the ASV for several nights now and he likes it so much better. The leak detection barely shows on the app but his AHI is between 3 and 7 every night. Is this an acceptable amount of events for ASV? Untreated he was at 93 so it is a huge improvement

I have not used an ASV, but most that report on line achieve very low AHI numbers; typically under 1. Basic CPAP's are very good at reducing obstructive apnea to very low levels, but they are not very effective in reducing central apnea. So, someone with a basic CPAP or APAP that cannot get low numbers, typically has central apnea. I use an APAP in CPAP mode, and achieve an AHI of around 3. Of that 0.3 is obstructive apnea.

Do you know what portion of that 3-7 for AHI is obstructive, central, and hypopnea? The machine may need some adjustment for optimum control.
