ResMed sells a cord which connects directly to the S8 and very likely has directions for connecting to a battery or 12V source. The unit is supposed to work with 12V or 24V. Note there is a plug right above the AC plug position. It is called a DC-12 and based on the complexity of this plug, it may not be a straight connection; take a look at the thing needed:

You can put a female cigarette type outlet on any battery; red lead to POSITIVE anode and black lead to NEGATIVE anode.
