Hello, friends.

I've been using the CPAP machine now for 3 months and I still get nights with a LOT of apneas. What's wierd is that it seems to be completely unpredictable. Some nights it's 1 event per hour and some as high as 13. Can anyone explain why there would be such a difference? Do people on CPAP machine ever reduce the number of apneas permanently?

Thanking you in advance....

It is unusual to have such a wide range in AHI. AHI however is never consistent from night to night, but should be more consistant than that. What is the breakdown in the type of Apnea events you are having? What % are Central, and what % are obstructive? If your machine is setup to display it, you can kind of get this information from the Sleep Report right on the machine. Or the other option which is better is to use a free software program called SleepyHead. It will tell you all this information and more. It requires a PC or Mac with a SD card reader.

The best thing you can do is download SleepyHead and look at your results. See my previous post. The purpose is to figure out what type of apnea events are occurring, and at what pressure. It could be as simple as a maximum pressure that is too low. Or it could be a more complex issue with central apnea possibly being made worse with pressure that is too high. If you want to post a SleepyHead Daily detail screenshot here, I would certainly give you my thoughts. Keep in mind that I am not a medical professional, but I am quite familiar with SleepyHead, and highly recommend using it.
