Thanks for everyone’s response. I’m doing much better with my new mask and machine.
Janet - like many couples, due to my snoring and restlessness my wife and I sleep in different beds.
Dan - I’m not only pulling off the mask, but turning my machine off. It’s funny what we do in the middle of the night. I call it being “sleep drunk”.
PROGRESS
I discovered two things. 1. My old nasal mask was slightly uncomfortable. That’s probably one reason for pulling it off during the night. 2. The new mask is more comfortable. But, I’m a side sleeper. My bed pillow tends to push the mask slightly out of alignment. When that happens, the air is blocked and I can’t breathe. All I have to do is tug on the nasal mask a bit, let it snap back into place and I’m good to go.
To prevent from breathing through my mouth I use a chin strap. I have the Ruby-Style chinstrap from the folks at cpap.com.
Also, are any of you using a CPAP pillow? I’m hesitant to get one due to the cost. Online $50 to $80. Insurance will not cover it because it’s a luxury item.

In the middle of the night I often unconsciously remove the mask. I switch off the machine and go right back to sleep. I wake the next morning and look over and see my mask across the CPAP.
Before I switched to the new mask and machine I periodically pulled the mask off because I felt I wasn’t getting enough air. Since I use a nasal pillow and have chronic sinusitis, the people at the sleep clinic feel it was because my sinuses were swollen and blocking the flow of air. This doesn’t seem to be the problem anymore.
Now that I have a new diagnosis and a prescription for Ambien and meds for restless leg, I should be making it through the entire night.
Do you have similar problems?
What have you tried that worked?
Should I simply give it some time to settle in?
Thanks
Welcome ID.
Awesome. Thanks mcailler.
Hello MyApnea fans. My name is Joe. Fairly new to the site and message board. I want to keep the 'Introductions' thread going.
I think it would be nice to have a "Introduce Yourself" thread under General. A place for new members to say hello and tell a little about themselves. I would also suggest, pinning it to the top so newbies can easily spot it.
Thanks.
I just signed up and seem to be the only person from Arkansas. Yeah me! I see many people are from Massachusetts. My wife is from Framingham. I’m from Alabama. (it’s a long story.)
I was working on a Facebook page to archive articles about sleep research and therapy. Putting it together, I stumbled upon MyApnea.org’s Facebook page which led me to the main website.
This seems like an awesome and intelligent resource for sleep apnea and support.
Quick history: I'm 56. Diagnosed with Central Sleep Apnea about ten years ago. I’m going back for sleep study #2 this week. I’m hoping to score a new CPAP machine in the process.
I’m looking forward to participation.
