Oh! Nothing weird at all. For example, I found that skipping the ramp cycle and going directly to my prescribed pressure eliminated that suffocating feeling I was getting. I also snugged up my mask, which eliminated some of the blowing sounds I was getting with each breath. These are all things that the tech discussed with me while setting up the machine. Thanks for your support!
Hi, I am only three days into getting used to the CPAP. It has been a real roller coaster ride. Crazy panic attacks, calm breathing, and everything in between. In reading this site, I have learned valuable tweeks, gained confidence in "messing" with some of the settings, and discovered a potential community in this terribly lonely process. (Even the most loving spouse doesn't want to be awakened at 2 hour intervals for CPAP crisis intervention). Perhaps I am only shouting out into the void, but I think it would helpful to have a forum for those of us in the early stages of adjustment. Does anyone else feel overwhelmed by this whole thing?
How frustrating for you! It sounds as though you are dealing with a situation rare enough that no one knows how to respond to your question. I wish I could be more helpful-mostly just wanted to respond so that you don't just hear crickets chirping. I think if I were in the same situation I would request a direct consult with the pulmonologist. There are so many layers of care in the sleep clinic, and I believe that the technicians and nurses are super knowledgeable, but you have a co-morbidity that is most likely outside of the usual care they provide. You might be getting the "canned" response to your sleep study results, which might require a second look from the doctor.
Dan, I just wanted to take the time to thank you for this particular post. Last night was my second night with the CPAP, and I dreaded going to bed. I did everything I was supposed to do in preparation. Even so, every time I put on the mask and fired it up, I was gripped with absolute panic, and felt as though I were suffocating. Around midnight I pulled out my laptop and started hunting for a forum where I could find support. I stumbled here, and happened to read your post. I resolutely went back to try again, and had a sudden epiphany. I went into Settings and turned off the Ramp function. Put on the mask, fired her up, and took a huge deep breath through my nose (I have nasal pillows). Wow! Sweet relief! "I can do this!" I thought. Lay back, and fell asleep. Thank you SO MUCH for being here. I am so excited to find this website, and grateful for the mentorship.
