I have been using my new cpap machine for 5 days, getting 8-9 hours of restful sleep a night, and I feel exhausted beyond belief! I had no problem adjusting to the pressure or the face mask, the pressure setting is variable and I'm using the warmed humidity. So why am I unable to function when I get up & drag myself out of bed in the morning?! I even went back to bed for a nap today, after a full night of sleep last night.

The cpap is fine - I even look forward to going to sleep with it - but daytime is terrible! I have zero energy, my body aches, and I feel like I've been run over by a Mack truck!

There is no chance I will stop using it, as I know the health consequences I've been living with. But can anyone explain WHY I'm so tired, if it's not discomfort-related? Could it be increasing my lung capacity, recruiting accessory muscles infrequently used, or some other physiologic reason? Is my brain needing to "reprogram" to deal with the relative abundance of oxygen (compared to a low of 79% O2 saturation on my sleep study)?

Any ideas?

weird, I wrote a reply to you but it seems to have disappeared along with a reply by someone else.
The short answer should be, we don't know what else is going on with you that could account for this. Additional info: if you have had the condition for a long time, then there is a period of time (varies by who tells you) where your body is trying to make up sleep, and your sleep architecture can change so you wind up having your regular get-up time be in the middle of deep sleep, which is miserable and can make you cranky and groggy. If you don't notice improvement, get back to your doc and don't take a non-answer for an answer. Are you having mask leaks, and so aren't getting full benefit from therapy? All kinds of things could be going on.

Hi ReservedRaspberryOtter2502. I agree with BrainsNeedSleep that you may be going through an adjustment period with your sleep architecture, and if things do not get better, you should get back to your doc. If you have done some looking around on the Forum, you have probably noticed people talking about machine data and downloads. Your home care equipment provider and/or physician should be able to download data from your machine to see if there are any early issues (mask leak, persistent respiratory events, etc.). Hope this helps, and please let us know how you are doing!
