This would work great for me, if I wasn't plagued with sinus congestion in the winter time. I've eaten boxes of mucinex, sprays, etc. to no avail. So after about 4 hours, I had to take my P10 nasal pillow mask off - too hard to breathe !

I'm disappointed to hear you could not make the P10 work. That has not been my experience with a nasal mask, but that of course is irrelevant to you. Your experience is what counts. Perhaps at another part of the year it could work for you, and for now, you may have to stick to a full face.

I will be giving it another try. I was able to get pretty good AHI - but then I was using it for only 4 hours.

I have an appointment with an ENT to see if there is any procedure to widen some of my nasal passages. I've always been plagued with gammy sinuses and narrow passageways. I had to give up scuba diving because my sinuses would hemorrhage.

Sierra ! After spraying my sinuses diligently for a week and taking antihistamines, I gave the P10 another try - turned down the pressure a couple cm, taped my mouth shut (cheated a little by putting a little hole in the tape to be able to mouth-breathe when I have bouts of suffocating. Easy to control otherwise to keep air out of my mouth. Best AHI on record for the past 4 1/2 months since I started cpap = 1.16 Definitely the way to go if I can manage my sinuses and allergies. Now, where's all my extra energy ?

I think low AHI is only one piece of the puzzle. But it step in the right direction, once you can do it comfortably.

Please use extreme caution with mouth taping, especially a Resmed P10. There has been reports on another forum of the vents clogging (possibly due to dirty unchanged filters) even more so if you have any respiratory issues. I also caution never to mouth tape if you are suffering unsettled stomach or flu like issues. If you vomit with a taped mouth, you will swallow into your lungs and the extreme acid and choking may kill you. Don't forget what may happen if you have a power failure. Your breathing will get much more difficult due to the air shutting off. I truly believe the human mind is powerful enough to train ourselves to breath out of our mouths. I am living proof of that! I honestly feel a stern warning must be given out when recommending someone tape their mouth.

Think about what happens if you vomit while wearing a full face mask. I suspect that is even worse.

Given a choice I'd choose neither. However it is nowhere near being "worse" as the FFM has room to fill up and only takes a second to remove it. You are missing my point. I suggested to give a warning when advising someone as there are elements of danger. Personally I won't wear it if I am sick from congestion or flu.

I have coughed when wearing my tape and it also only takes a second to remove it. That's why you fold one or both ends. After removing it, I just replace it and continue to march.

Sorry, but I don't accept that mouth tape is a significant risk. But I can accept that it is a choice that not everyone is comfortable with. As others have suggested you always leave a pull tab for the tape. A nasal pillow mask comes off far easier than a full face mask.

I have been using tape for almost a year, with the usual colds and nasal congestion. Have not found a situation where I feel it is any kind of risk. Keeping the tape in place is much more of a realistic problem than trying to get it off.

Now if I was puking sick, I probably would not wear my CPAP at all.

I often mouth tape even when I don't use CPAP or oral device. I have had no problems whatsoever.

I'm with thegreatgrampa.

No particular reason.

Just a chance to have a good old fashioned war!

Here, let me divide the forum down the middle with this line of tape and we can all get started. :)

My wife might be in favor of me mouth taping, but only when I'm not using CPAP :(

I, however, find the whole concept abhorrent and terrifying.

The cave men didn't mouth tape and they sur..... well maybe they didn't but that was because they got eaten by tigers.

Sci-Fi characters don't mouth tape ...... although they don't seem to sleep either.

That brings me to the ultimate argument.

It's just not natural!

There is nothing natural about using a CPAP.

Good point Sierra.

I agree. :)

CPAP is also abhorrent and terrifying! :P

But I think we should try to limit the collateral damage here.

And stick to the subject of mouth taping.

When Taping your lips you should always test to make sure you can easily and quickly remove the tape. Your jaw is opened and closed by some of the strongest muscles in the body, simply because you are constantly exercising it eating and talking. If you want to open your jaw it will open, that is unless you have it wired shut.

I don't think you can deny that there are some risks with mouth taping.

Yes being alive can be dangerous and being sick has it's dangers.

Full face masks are also dangerous but not the same as mouth taping.

In my view mouth taping is an ADDED danger and possibly even a GREATER danger.

I think that some years from now we will look back on mouth taping as a short term obsession or trend. :P

Hopefully by then there will be real solutions to the problems that drive people to such extremes.

Well said Mr. Gremlin. I doubt seriously it will be "some years from now", but much sooner. Sad part of the whole thing is someone dies in there sleep with a Cpap attached to their face and they will just say "natural causes", so rarely would there be an investigation to find the true cause. I also believe we may hear a lot more about the blockage in the vents of the P10 of which I am a user as it is my favorite pillow mask.

If you clean your mask properly weekly there is no reason to have blockage of the vents in the P10. I have one that is nearing 1 year of age and it works just fine. I will replace the nasal pillow insert at 1 year or so though. The weakness of the P10 is the flimsy headgear. That can be solved by replacing it with the headgear from the Swift FX. See link below.

Am I allowed to supply a link from another forum or is that frowned upon? The link is in reference to Hypercapnia and surprisingly it is now believed the blockage may becoming from moisture coming from a heated Climateline hose.

Just do it thegreatgrampa.

If they don't like it they can remove it.

I don't know how the policies really apply but if the purpose of this forum is to help Apnea sufferers and to share experiences and knowledge it would seem petty and self serving to ban outside sources simply because they might be perceived as competitors.

Was this the one you wanted to link?

EVIDENCE OF AIRFIT P10 VENT OBSTRUCTION CAUSING HYPERCAPNIA

There must be another source somewhere outside of that forum but I can't find it quickly and it's way past my bedtime.

Yes this was it. I guess there is no need for me to post it now. Being new to the forum I had no idea what the rules for posting were. Hell, I couldn't even find any rules. I DO see they award you points and I don't surmise they are for being good little boys or girls.

There are terms at the bottom someone once told me and on the home page or some such place.

Of course I haven't looked.

You know, I've been staring at those points for 4 months now and not really noticed them.

If they were for evil stuff I'd have some for sure.

If they were for good stuff Sierra would have lots.

So what are they for?

Does anybody have any points?

Can we just invent a purpose perhaps? :)

Any suggestions?

Water alone would never block anything. Minerals in the water over time could form deposits causing blockage. When I clean my equipment, I always wash my hose, mask, and humidifier tank with pure vinegar first to remove any minerals. Perhaps that is why I have not had any issue.

And, then there are those who are doing research with masks which restrict venting to increase rebreathing and CO2. See this link below.
