I really hope someone can help. My husband has been to the doctor and has been referred for a sleep study. However, that was weeks ago and we haven't been called yet (the doctor said it would take a while). My problem is my husband's symptoms got much worse tonight. He was gasping for air! He's never done that before. I woke him up and he was awake and still couldn't get a breath in for a few more seconds. He has a follow up appointment this week, so hopefully the Dr can put a rush on it. My question is, what do we do in the meantime? So far all I see us to lay on his side. He doesn't drink, smoke, or take sedatives so we don't have to worry about that. I just want to avoid this situation or help him as best I can. It's so scary!
One thing that I found very helpful, is to sleep in a recliner. I live in Florida and when the power is out, especially after a hurricane when it could be out for more than a day, that upright sleeping position is a 'lifesaver.' I will use a towel, or a horseshoe shaped pillow to keep my head upright.

Good advice. Sleeping in a chair can be very helpful. Also remember that, in general terms, the damage that OSA does is cumulative over the long term (gradually building up over years) and that a few weeks, or even months, waiting shouldn't put your husband at any greater risk.
Call them! Don't wait to be called. Take the initiative. If the sleep lab that you were referred to can't get him in quickly ask your doctor for the name of another lab. There are usually several in every area. If that doesn't work, contact a dentist in your area that treats sleep. They can usually help.
I agree with Newoptions on taking the initiative. Having been there I've found you have to continually stress the acute nature of the issue and the danger that either you or in this case your husband are in on a daily basis. What ended up being the turning point for me in getting timely help was not being able to drive on my really bad days. If they know you're a danger to yourself or others they may be able to put you on a list for last minute available appointment openings and things of that nature. Its the all too common scenario of the squeakiest wheel getting the grease so to speak....not fair but it is what is.
