Interested in people's experience and views related to depressive symptoms before and after treatment from both CPAP and dental devices.

In my case, I see no correlation. I am being treated with rx and began using using CPAP 15 months ago. No change. Sorry.

Depression has many causes. The data indicate that in many, but not all individuals with symptoms of depression and sleep apnea, depressed mood improves with effective sleep apnea treatment. However, every person is different. As a physician, I have had some depressed patients who felt "reborn" after sleeping well on CPAP. I also have seen some others who reported no improvement, as you do. What we don't know is how to recognize the types of depression that are more or less likely to improve with sleep apnea treatment- as MyApnea enrolls more and more patients, we can look for such patterns to help us understand this.

Even if you are not feeling improvement in your mood, treating sleep apnea is useful for reducing the risk of heart disease, stroke and other health problems. Hope you are feeling some relief!

There is also a mood patient powered research network you can consider joining.

I have been using th c pap machine for a month and a half. I absolutely hate it BUT this is the best I have felt in a couple of years. No more depression,no more debilitating fatigue and I am exercising again, I'm losing weight and able to enjoy all the things I used to love. It isn't easy. It's angry making, but it sure beats the alternative.

Wicked,

It sounds like you are doing lots of good things to improve your health and quality of life and feeling better! Sometimes even modest weight loss can help sleep apnea to the point CPAP might not be needed. Keep up the exercise, etc. and keep in touch with your doctor to both--a) do what ever can be done to get the most comfortable mask and machine for you; and b) to consider undergoing a re-evaluation after weight loss.
