Hello all,

I'm wondering if other CPAP users have a persistent sore throat from using the machine? I'm asking on behalf of my dad (who doesn't really use a computer) as he has recently developed a sore throat, nasal congestion and cough that just won't go away. He's wanting to know if it is a side effect of the machine and if anybody else has suffered not just a dry throat but a sore throat from using the CPAP machine. He's been using the machine for around 3-4 months.

Thanks

It shouldn't really cause a sore throat. Dry can definitely happen, but increasing the humidity should help. I did have trouble with sinus infections at one point that I believe was in part from my CPAP, but more from my laziness with keeping it properly cleaned. I'd make sure he's washing it more often and disinfecting it appropriately so he's not reinfecting himself with the same cold virus or germs.

I haven't gotten a sore throat from using the CPAP, but I've gotten quite a bit of nasal dryness. I basically have to use nose spray on a daily basis.

I have had patients with the same experience as your dad, and the first response is a humidifier. Does he have one and, if so, is he using it correctly? Also, what sort of mask does he have and what leak numbers is he getting from his machine? Mask leaks can also cause this problem.

One mask was nadal only, other was full mouth. Cant sleep well at all in 6 weeks. Will I ever get used to this damn machine?
