I started out with the xs nose pillow, my nose got very sore at the openings, so I then tried the small nose pillow, with the same result. I tried to lubricate my openings but that did not help. The straps for the type of mask does not have an adjustment buckle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am actually getting less sleep now. (3rd day on machine)

Thank you for any help Andy

Hi Andy13. I had the same experience when I started wearing nasal pillows and could not tolerate them all night for the first week or so. My nose was sore for probably the first 2 weeks, but the soreness eventually resolved. I have since heard the same story from many patients who use nasal pillows. I think it just takes time to build tolerance, since we are not used to having anything inside our noses. I hope this helps! If the soreness is unbearable, you might consider asking your equipment provider for a nasal mask that fits over your nose. This may help give your nose a break.

Had the same non-adjustable strap which didnt stay put. got a different pillow mask with adjustable lower fabric strap AND adjustable upper silicone strap. had same issues with pillow fit but think new straps have reduced movement of the pillows and thus chafing. had used water-soluble lubricant (yes...K-Y!) on the first one but havent needed it on this newer one. I have a heated humidifier and heated tubing. I increased humidity to near max, got a tubing cozie, all is copacetic! I'm ~ 8 weeks on CPAP and its going better than expected. See your provider until you get the right fit. Update - just found I still have packaging for new mask. It is Swift FX for her for use with ResMed, catalog # 61540. Hope this helps...

Before I had to return to a FF mask for unrelated reasons, I also used the Swift FX nasal pillows and LOVED them -- no issues with soreness at all, ever. Respironics also has a new nasal-kind-of mask where it doesn't actually go up into the nostrils and it seems to be pretty cool -- though, alas, at the moment I cannot use it. I am hoping to adapt my stuff to work with it one of these days. I wonder if those satin pillowcases that women use to keep their hairstyles from getting messed up (at least my elderly aunts did) would be helpful in reducing mask slippage, especially with nasal pillows.

Andy13: You did not mention which nasal pillows mask you are using, but if it is the AirFit P10, then you adjust the mask by separating the two parts of the strap that goes around the back of the head. Put the upper part of the strap close to your forehead and the lower part of the strap close to the back of your neck and this will loosen the tightness of the mask against your nose.
