Has Your ResMed AirSense 10 Been Dumbed Down?

It is possible that your AirSense 10 has been set up to limit the data collected and displayed. This can be done in two ways:

  • All AirSense 10 machines come from the factory with a 4 GB SDHD card installed. However, it can be removed. This pretty much prevents the user from taking the card out to transfer data to a software program like SleepyHead for viewing. On the basic AirSense 10 CPAP machine this is not a big loss, as that machine does not record detailed data in any case. However, the Elite machine and AutoSet machines do record detailed data and your access to that is lost if the card has been removed. That said, the capability to store data going forward can be achieved by simply installing any SDHD card from 4 GB up to 32 GB.

  • The second way a machine can be dumbed down is by setting the Essentials Option to On instead of to Plus. This is a setting in the Clinical Menu, and can be easily changed if you can navigate the Clinical Menu system, which is pretty much like the standard User Menu. This change to Plus does two things. It increases the number of items you can control from the standard User Menu, and it allows you to see a much more detailed Sleep Report.

The two menu items added are on-off control of EPR and SmartStart.

The sleep report additions are:

  • Allows you to set the period the readings are averaged over
  • Days used
  • Days of 4+ hours
  • Average hours per day
  • Total used hours
  • Average pressure
  • Average Leak Rate l/min
  • Total AHI
  • Central Index

I have the A10, but my wife has the S9. Yes, having the removable lid on the S9 reservoir makes it easier to clean out the bottom. However, it is a lot more complex, with 3 parts to it, while the A10 is pretty much one piece. I have to say I prefer the built in humidifier and the reservoir over the S9. The one nice feature of the S9 is that there is a built in light to let you see the water level when room lights are dim or dark. With my A10 I end up leaving a mini flashlight beside my machine so I can check the water level each night to make sure I have not forgotten to fill it.

Sorry, but your description comparing the S9 water tank and the A10 water tank seems to me to be completely wrong.
You say that the S9 is "a lot more complex"? It has two simple parts, a top and a bottom--and both parts allow easy access to the whole part for gently wiping the surface with your hand while washing the tank.
The A10, on the other hand has three parts: a bottom tray, a plastic piece that surrounds the perimeter of the tray, and a top plastic piece. The top part is a remarkably complicated set of plastic surfaces and tubular sections which one cannot reach with your hands or fingers to clean the surface, and the bottom part of the tray has plastic and metal in layers with a little hole through which liquid and moisture can gather with no way to clean out--even with a Q-tip. So how can you say that the "A10 is pretty much one piece".?? Are you really a customer or are you a customer-rep? You can't be looking at the same thing I am when comparing the S9 and A10 water tanks.

The water tank of the S-9 and A10 are SO dramatically different, I really cannot understand what advantages were the engineers thinking of when they designed the A10 water tank. What were the design criteria for taking something that was so simple and replacing it with something so complex? Especially when the downside is that the A10 tank is almost impossible to clean because one cannot reach all the surfaces of the tank. I can't see any advantage to the new design. Hopefully someone can enlighten us--I'm eager to learn.

Thank you; I received a Resmed AirSense 10 Autoset several weeks ago, and learned that the SD card had been removed. I realize that it transmits independent of the card, but any idea why the supplier (Lincare) removed it? As you note, doing so prevents me from acquiring more detailed info.

I think there may be a bit of a push by some vendors to keep the users away from the detailed data, and coming back to them. I don't agree with it. But, I think worse than that if the SD card is removed then the detailed data is simply lost. You can't get it and all they get transmitted daily is the summary or compliance data which is very limited. If you have the SD card installed you can view it with SleepyHead, or if you take the SD to your provider they should be able to view it with the ResMed ResScan software. But with no SD the data is simply gone. I don't think it is ethical to take the card out as all machines come with one from the factory. If you want to learn a little more about it, have a look at the technical manual at the link below. See pages 28-29. This is a very good manual to keep for yourself as a pdf.

At last a real live conspiracy!

Surely they don't think that users might want to know the details of their own therapy or (shock horror) even be motivated to make minor adjustments to their own equipment!

There must be a simpler, more reasonable explanation.

Maybe they just misplaced all those SD cards, or wanted them for the camera on that next holiday, or were short on cash and needed to sell them to break even, or hoped to create a free enterprise market selling slightly used SD cards back to the users.

So many seemingly innocent explanations. So what do you reckon?

Well it does seem to have all the ingredients for a basic conspiracy but if someone could add a creative twist or two (plots, deception, perhaps torture!) we might even turn it into a grand conspiracy! :)

My informal tracking of the issue suggests that the US DME are the ones mainly doing it. I suspect there is not a huge market for 4 GB SD cards, so there must be another reason...

A few comments

  1. the water container on the 10. It comes completely apart. go to 1:32 of the video if it doesnt start there https://youtu.be/RXhAcyO3NFU?t=92

  2. Have you signed up at https://myair.resmed.com? It gives very detailed reports to you. Its the same info/reports your Dr and/or Therapist uses

it gives data by day, last time used, "X" time period. I think its last 90 days. below are just a few things.. if you notice usage , mask seal, etc, by clicking each you get the detailed graph over.. as i show below. I havent used sleepy head or oscar, but i'd imagine its the same info. Let me know if its not
