I took the long and more expensive way to get there, but I believe I have finally found a good durable solution to the ResMed AirFit P10 flimsy headgear problem. I fitted the ResMed Swift FX headgear to the P10. Here are the steps I took to do it:

  • Removed the fabric covering over each side of the attachment area on the P10. You kind of stretch it toward the nose piece and it unhooks.

  • You will find a gray plastic strap that has a bend in it under the covering. I am not sure it is totally necessary, but I took the time to heat up the gray plastic in the area of the bend with an electric heat gun being careful not to overheat it, and then straightened out the strap.

  • Next I cut the strap to leave 17 mm of it remaining. I used a sharp box cutter. Then I trimmed off the corners a bit to match the recess in the Swift FX strap. See this photo.

  • With the tabs fitted into the FX strap I then taped each one with 1" 3M Micropore tape (used for mouth taping) to hold it secure. This probably will not survive a wash, so the tape will have to be replaced with each cleaning.

  • The finished product. I'm thinking of naming it the Sierra FX-10 Hybrid!

And best of all it seems to actually work and feels very comfortable. There is no jet engine velocity air rushing out of the mask. The headgear is secure on my head, and it does not seem to leak. My Leak Rate graph from last night:

The only little issue was that I bought the complete Swift FX fit pack, and all I really needed to buy was the headgear for 1/3 the cost!

Update: One issue I had with this mask is that the black strap would slip up on my head during the night. I tried a couple of things but settled on using Shoe Goo to glue the hook half of a strap of Velcro to the inside of that strap. Now it stays in place and is still comfortable. Has not pulled out all my remaining hair - yet!

Welcome to the forum. Your issue is fairly common, and not only with CPAP users. Here is what comes to mind for things to try:

  • Make sure your PAP machine is set up for the most comfortable starting ramp pressures to get you to sleep. If you post your specific machine model and the pressures it is set to, and we may be able to help. When you wake up in the night and feel you can't get back to sleep, shut the machine off and get up, and read or something else boring. Don't use a computer or smartphone. Probably best to keep them out of the bedroom. And then when you do go back to bed, your machine will start in the ramp mode again. The long term goal is to get one long sleep, but in the short term it does not make sense to toss and turn in the bed when you can't sleep. Just get up. Reserve the bed as a place to sleep.
  • Do whatever you can to make your mask and machine comfortable. If the pressure is bothering you, talk to your sleep clinic about any opportunities to reduce it.
  • Try to go to bed at the same time every night, and get up at the same time. 7-8 hours sleep is all that most people need. If you try to push the time longer, it can make for poorer quality sleep, and waking up in the night.
  • Try to avoid naps during the day and evening. Save your sleep for night time in bed.
  • Avoid alcohol or the like before bed. It can get you to sleep quicker, but when it wears off you wake up.
  • If your climate control allows it, set the temperature in the room lower for sleeping. 18 C or 65 F is considered ideal for sleeping.
