CPAP machines are a good entry way into CPAP therapy and work very well with a fixed pressure for patients who prefer fixed pressure. However, over time a person's physiology and apnea conditions change which may require manual pressure adjustments for continued satisfactory management of sleep apnea on a fixed machine. AUTOCPAP has basically eliminated the need for ongoing manual adjustments of settings by a DME, automatically sensing and adjusting the pressure settings to manage patient sleep apnea events. An added benefit of autocpap is the machine can be converted to a fixed CPAP machine if the patient prefers a fixed pressure setting machine.

Hope this helps.

I have a machine that does auto sensing or you can set the rate, but I have to say I don't love it on auto because it seems to go higher than I actually need and then causes side effects. We are trying to figure out a good set pressure for me as I do much better on lower, but there are times when it's not quite enough (colds, congestion or sleeping on my back effect things). I'd suggest going for something where you can change between auto and set if you find it works better for you one way or the other.
